​Dimension Two: Be Compassionate and Aware
The Conscious Use of Power


​Introduction

Five Topics:  Personal Power, Shame, Touch, Sexuality, Transference. 

You will understand the difference between personal power and role power and why this difference matters.  You will explore how shame interferes with ethical behavior.  You will learn about if, how, and when touch can be used ethically.  You will deepen your professional knowledge of sexuality.  You will gain skill in detecting and working with transference.

One Optional Topic:  Non-ordinary States.

Right Use of Power: The Heart of Ethics (2015 - 10th Anniversary Edition)

​1. Personal Power
​

Learning Goals:
1. To increase your self-awareness about your beliefs and history in relationship to power issues. 
2. To learn more about how you use your power, and the impact of your power on others. 
3. To name and cultivate attitudes that are empowering for clients. 

​2. Shame

Learning Goals:
1. To describe the nature and dynamics of shame. 
2. To discuss how shame can undermine accountability. 
3. To name feelings and behaviors which tend to indicate shame, and specific recommendations for working with shame.

3. Touch

Learning Goals:
1. To discuss the values and dangers in the use of touch in helping professional relationships. 
2. To list guidelines for the use of touch. 
3. To be able to assess for the use of touch with clients

4. Sexuality

Learning Goals:
1. Honest reflection about the complex issues around sexual current, for both therapist and client. 
2. To clearly state the kind of harm sexual intimacy can cause clients. 
3. To develop and name strategies for dealing with sexual feelings coming from a client toward a helping professional. 

5. Transference
​
Learning Goals:
1. To describe how transference and counter-transference issues can result in misuses of power.
2. To discuss how to work with transference and counter-transference within the helping relaitonship.
3. To recognize and name signs of possible counter-transference.

Optional: Non-Ordinary States

Learning Goals:
1. To explain the concept that therapy, bodywork, and many other healing or personal growth processes often induce a non-ordinary state of consciousness in the client.
2. To be able to talk about the qualities and effects of non-ordinary experience.
3. To present practical knowledge about what adjustments need to be made when the client is in a non-ordinary state.
